Winter samples Depicted here Jordan Biggar and Ryan Malec for the year 1999 & 2000 are drilling 1 of 3 holes required to measure the operation of the aeration system.
The fancy auger is a called JIFFY. However there is common complaint about our "Jiffy" most of the volunteers are aware of, Jiffy takes an hour or two to start. Jiffy works best in a heated garage - show Jiffy some hard ice, cold weather and Jiffy goes on strike!

Besides the personality problems with the equipment , the measurements overall are fun and easy to take.

The measurement include:
O2 and water temp. taken  at 2  levels 1 meter and at 2 meters.  Results are published with Manitoba Environment and posted to the public
Close up file picture of the measuring device in action operated by the Roberton Family above 1996
Winter Sampling ensures good performence
The measuring process is accomplished at 2 levels: one at 1 meter and the other at 2 meters from the surface.  Gull Lake has shown dramatic improvements with the inclusion of the modern aeration system.  The aeration system on this lake is operated by the volunteers in the winter months only

Of interest
• Did you know the warmest water temperature is at the bottom of the lake.

• In mid winter the lake temperature is near 0.2 degrees C. all about.

• The Year 2000, was odd in that we noted thinner than normal ice.

• Ice depth on this lake ranges from year to year as has been recorded.

The ice thickest  has been over 3 feet!

• In this year of  2000, it was in the vicinity of 18 inches to 2 feet.  The lake
temperature was warmer at  1.2C to 1.9C  compared to other years of .2C

• Much of the lake basin is 2.5 meters deep with the deepest location being
