Cottage Owners Help Government Protect Recreational Lakes Current Manitoba Report remarks: Many cottage owners have formed working partnerships with government to protect the quality of lakes and rivers for future generations. 1. Gull Lake had suffered considerable degradation over the past 30 years. Recreation has been severely impaired. Fish populations have plummeted and drought has seriously affected water levels. In February 1993, the Gull Lake Basin Management Board was created. A management plan was developed, based on the extensive water quality and hydrology research conducted on the lake since 1972. The board initiated an environmental awareness campaign and installed an aerator in July 1994. The lake was also restocked with fish. A proposal to pump groundwater into Gull Lake is being investigated.
